Known for their BBQ prowess, Kansas City has taken their Tex-Mex game to new heights in recent years. The city of fountains is the 36th largest city in the United States and boasts a strong fajita game.

We reviewed three local favorites: Mi Ranchito, Jose Peppers, and Fajita Pete’s.

#3 Mi Ranchito

Mi Ranchito – lunch time order made while sitting at the bar.

Timing

5 minutes from order to table.

Steak

No flavor, bland, chewy, and dry – was not marinated, only seasoned.

Veggies

Large bed of onions, one strip of green pepper, one strip of red pepper.

Sides

Cheese, guac, sour cream – plenty of each.

Mi Ranchito Overall Experience

We went in for a late lunch and sat at the bar to order. Our food arrived very fast within 5 minutes on a fajita plate, no sizzle, but was smoking slightly. We first tasted the skirt steak alone and immediately noticed how bland and chewy it was. It was very dry and overcooked. Without the fajita being loaded with all the veggies, cheese, guac and sour cream, it wouldn’t be very enjoyable. Not something I would order again!

#2 Jose Peppers

Jose Peppers – Dinner 7:00

Timing

14 minutes from order to table.

Steak

Did not come out sizzling or smoking hot. Steak is tender with hints of salt, pepper, and garlic. Seasoned, not marinated. Some tough and chewy pieces.

Veggies

Generous portion of sautéed red and green peppers and a bed of onions.

Sides

Cheese, sour cream, pico, guac – all very tasty and plenty to make several fajitas.

Jose Peppers Overall Experience

Jose Peppers had the biggest portion of everything from meat to veggies and sides, so if you want leftovers, this is your meal. Part of the entire fajita experience is presentation – smelling them and hearing them before they ever hit the table. This is a meal that is a sensory advertisement as servers walk them to the table. This was a complete missed opportunity. No sizzle, smoke or charred smell told us our meal was on the way. Veggies are veggies and sides are sides. The steak is the one place to shine with this meal, and it was missed.

#1 Fajita Pete’s

Fajita Pete’s – dinner order made and eaten at the restaurant.

Timing

13 minutes from order to table.

Steak

Delivered smoking hot and marinated with a ton of flavor, juicy, tender, with hints of lime, cilantro, garlic obvious.

Veggies

large portion of sautéed onions, one small slice of red and one small slice of green pepper.

Sides

cheese, sour cream, guac – plenty for order but not in the amount shown on the menu board (menu board showed small bowls of each side, we had a smaller portion than that).

Fajita Pete’s Overall Experience

Overall experience was great. The meals came out sizzling and smoking hot with great presentation. The flavor of the steak was fantastic. It was clear this skirt steak had been marinated vs seasoned. The steak was juicy with hints of lime, garlic, and cilantro and full of flavor. I would have liked to see more green and red peppers with the presentation. Once our fajita was built complete with all veggies and sides, it was the best fajita we’ve had in a very long time. This is something we would go back for and tell others about!!

The Best Fajitas in Kansas City – Fajita Pete’s

Overall, the best total experience of steak fajitas was with Fajita Pete’s. This was an easy decision. They exceeded our expectations of what appears to be a quick, grab n go QSR. Their steak flavor, texture, and juiciness were by far the best of the three top-rated fajita restaurants we reviewed. Both Jose Peppers and Mi Ranchito are sit down family style restaurants that have the advertising runway fajitas deserve on the way to the table. Unfortunately, they both missed the mark on presentation and quality and taste of the steak itself. If you want quality steak fajitas in the Kansas City area, Fajita Pete’s is our pick. If you want family style sit down experience with mediocre fajitas, then I suggest you go somewhere else.

Congratulations, Fajita Pete’s! You have the best fajitas in Kansas City!
